Martongate History
The Martongate School Logo
Before the school was opened in February 1972, the new Head Teacher, Mr John S. Taylor, decided that it would be appropriate to have a school unform to identify Martongate school from the existing Bridlington schools - Burlington, Moorfield and Hilderthorpe. He chose maroon and grey for the colours and believed the badge should reflect the catchment area which the school served.
After approaching his friend and local architect, Mr V. H. Pool, he commissioned a suitable badge to be designed that would reflect the area and be used on the children's uniforms. Together they discussed the history of Sewerby and recollected the fairly recent Anglo-Saxon finds at Home Farm, Sewerby. These finds were exhibited at the Sewerby Hall museum and an inspection of these provided the inspiration to use an Anglo-Saxon brooch as Martongate's school motif - a stylised horse head.
